Awareness at diskoBabel e.V.

Within our society, many structures exist that lead to a large number of people being affected by discrimination more or less frequently.

Discrimination is when people are devalued based on (attributed) characteristics. Discrimination has many different faces: transgressions, (recurring) assaults and violence can be verbal, physical and psychological (such as harassment or “funny” remarks). Sometimes it is hardly perceptible to outsiders (for example in the form of looks, or of barriers and obstacles, such as certain groups of people having only limited access to a certain place or to certain resources).

As diskoBabel e.V., we recognise that there are discriminatory structures in our association, and we strive to counteract these structures.

All people who are members of diskoBabel e.V. actively fight against any form of discrimination, for example on the grounds of

  • gender,
  • ethnicity,
  • disabilities,
  • social status,
  • sexual orientation,
  • or religion or world view.

It does not matter whether you are on site at the association or, for example, active online on our communication channels.

As a member of diskoBabel e.V., I agree to comply with the following guidelines when dealing with others:

  1. I try to be aware of my own privileges (for example, whether I experience advantages because I am white or male, or because my parents are wealthy and have an academic background, etc.).
  2. I stand up for people who experience discrimination and try to break down discriminatory structures.
  3. I listen when people talk about discrimination and ask what I can do to help.
  4. I pay attention to the psychological and physical boundaries of others and always ask before I pass on photos or numbers.
  5. I try to learn from my own mistakes, and I take responsibility for my own behaviour.
  6. I point out to others when they do not follow these rules.

Exclusion from diskoBabel e.V.

In the event of repeated serious violations of this agreement, the association may exclude members from the association. Exclusion from the association occurs if right-wing extremist and anti-democratic attitudes are expressed within and outside the association and/or in the case of membership in right-wing extremist parties and organisations.

The awareness team of diskoBabel e.V.

If you have experienced violence or discrimination, or if you feel uncomfortable on site or during a plenary session, you can contact the awareness team.

The awareness team’s job is not to judge what happened. The awareness team has no “police function”. The awareness team is only there for you as the affected person. That means we work on a partisan basis. This also means that only you, as the person affected, decide when you have experienced something as discrimination. You also decide what you want to tell us and what you need. If you want, the awareness team is there for you and can support you in finding and implementing a solution that makes sense for you.

Contact the awareness team: awareness@diskobabel.de

The awareness team is primarily composed of white FLINTA people (cis women, lesbians, inter, non-binary, trans and agender people). Cis people are people who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Some of the people in the awareness team are queer. Some of the people in the team have disabilities or chronic illnesses. And some of them have experienced discrimination based on social status. All people in the awareness team have done professional training on the subject.

Awareness at diskoBabel e.V.

What does awareness mean?

Awareness means being mindful of something or someone.

In the context of diskoBabel e.V., it means that all people treat each other with respect. This also means we should know our own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others.

It is important to know that exclusion and violence are a problem in our society and that people should support each other.

At diskoBabel e.V. we are actively against exclusion and violence and fight

  • for the rights of people with disabilities,
  • against racism,
  • against poverty,
  • for equal rights for all religions,
  • for equal rights for women and
  • for equal rights for queer people.

For example, people who are homosexual or bisexual or who are trans*, non-binary and intergender often describe themselves as queer. There are many more genders that people can have. These people often describe themselves as queer too.

Exclusion from diskoBabel e.V.

If someone breaks these rules very often and very badly, the club can no longer have that person in the club.

Also if someone shows right-wing extremist and undemocratic opinions, whether inside or outside the club, or if the person is a member of right-wing extremist parties or groups: then they are no longer a member of diskoBabel e.V.

The awareness team of diskoBabel e.V.

The diskoBabel e.V. awareness team is there to help members when they need help.

If you think someone has violated your boundaries or if you have experienced violence or discrimination, you alone decide what you want to do. We will always stand by your side and believe you. For example, this can be support in the form of talks or referral to counselling centres.

If a member of diskoBabel e.V. does not respect the guidelines as described in this Code of Conduct, the board can expel members.

If you need help, please don’t hesitate to contact the awareness team: awareness@diskobabel.de
